The Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland is renowned all over the world. It’s well worth reading the story of founder Claude Nobs, who has a forever bond to Deep Purple and their song “Smoke on the Water” in particular. The Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition was founded in 2003. Claude Nobs, who sadly passed away in January 2010, launched this competition for professional jazz singers to help them reach a wider audience and meet peers and established professionals. Shure Europe has been involved as a sponsor from the start.
From Journalism to Jazz
Sara Decker (Aachen, Germany) initially studied Journalism and Cultural Science, but after she graduated, her passion for singing brought her to the Maastricht Conservatory. She went to New York on a scholarship and founded the Sara Decker Group. Sara recorded an EP and a full length album “Long Distance,” which has recently been released. In 2017, Sara registered for the Montreux Jazz Voice Competition and was invited to participate. She made it to the semi-finals and was among the selected seven vocalists. Then she made the finals along with Alexander Lövmark and Talie Monin… and won 2nd prize. Congratulations, Sara!
