Every year, music lovers look forward to the Pinkpop festival in the south of Limburg, even though this year’s line-up with Justin Bieber kind of stirred the pot and made for some heated discussions in social media. But a music festival like Pinkpop would perhaps not be complete without a little drama every now and then, right? There was plenty of drama and excitement back in 1979, when Mick Jagger was supposed to perform with Peter Tosh with whom he had a hit, “Don’t Look Back” in 1978.
The story goes Mick Jagger got annoyed by the TV being present to film the concert and then decided to leave, just before he was due to sing with Peter Tosh. Mick’s presence in Maastricht, where he stayed at the Hotel Derlon at the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, is recycled almost every year and close to celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Pinkpop 1979 had a great line-up by the way: Massada, the Average White Band, Dire Straits, The Police, Elvis Costello, Rush, Peter Tosh.
